president and speaker boehner met at the white house to discuss efforts to resolve the fiscal cliff. we're not reading out details of the conversation, but the lines of communication remain open. cnn's dan lothian is at the white house this morning. dan, i guess the fact that the lines of communication are open is a good sign. >> reporter: that's right. it is a good sign. it was just about a week ago that we were reporting about how nothing was going on, not in public and not in private. aides up on the hill, republican aides telling us there were no phone calls, no e-mails, no communication whatsoever. so this is encouraging in that the president sat down face to face with speaker boehner, but i think it's telling that both the speaker's office and white house put out these identical statements. i mean, what it shows here is that they've agreed to negotiate in private. there's a strategy here not to make this play out in public but rather happen behind closed doors so they can hash this out, hammer this out. it's unclear whether this will continue at that level. i did communicate with a senior administration official this morning, trying to find out if there are additional meetings planned or phone calls, and this official telling m

avert the fiscal cliff. >> exactly, very good, so much more clever and quicker than i am. dana good morning. the president and the house speaker offered new proposals. what do you know about them, if anything? >> reporter: you know, they're being very, very careful, they're holding their cards close to the vest, which i think you know as a reporter is frustrating but as somebody who certainly wants to get, to see this solved, that that is a completely nonpart son thing to say. it maybe is a good sign, because both sides are being very careful not to let the cat out of the bag on some of the specifics because they don't want the process to blow up even before it really starts in earnest. what we are told from democratic and republican sources is that it is still really just sort of the big picture that they're going back and forth on, big picture meaning how much are they going to try to raise when it comes to revenue. we understand that the white house earlier this week reduced their number by about $2 billion. the president wanted to raise revenue by $1.6 billion and said $1.4 billion, which is

november. it is good news for investors, believe it or not. 25 days away from the fiscal cliff, those new jobs number could also be good for president obama and might end up giving him some of the leverage dana was talking about. listen to this. >> president obama's argument has been that the economy is doing well enough it could handle a tax hike. if the economy were in recession as we saw last time, then he would be reluctant to lift that top rate. if the economy is growing sharply, then if -- the -- some damage from lifting the top rate then maybe the economy can afford it. now the gdp growth number is not as strong as the jobs report. but if we a weak jobs report, then i think the president would have a really, really hard time getting people, even moderate democrats, to increase the marginal rate. the fact it is a strong report, i think, puts wind in the sails. >> wind in his sails. that's not necessarily what the speaker was saying. let's get straight total son kosik live at the new york stock exchange. >> raw numbers. what is the dow doing? >> we are not seeing the wind go in a
